Why choose us

Why choose us

Barchester Healthcare supports adults of all ages and provides different types of care across the UK. Our specialist services include mental health hospitals, care for people with learning disabilities, residential care, complex dementia nursing care and neurological and rehabilitation care services.

These services are commissioned and funded by the NHS and by local authority adult services and in many areas we are part of standard NHS continuing healthcare frameworks for the agreed procurement of our services. The aim of our adult services is to work collaboratively with the local health and social care community in order to deliver outcome-focused, responsive and innovative care and support models that effectively deliver person-centred quality care that is value for money and meets the needs of the local population.

NHS FOUNDATION TRUSTS

We have a number of collaborative relationships and partnerships with NHS foundation trusts and have worked co-productively with social care commissioners to pilot and develop alternatives to hospital care models.

We believe every one of the individuals we support deserves dignity, choice and independence. We help the people we support keep up community links and welcome those visits from family and friends that can be so important.

OUR STAFF

We constantly strive to provide a consistent and high-quality service. We do this through our staff. We recruit motivated and compassionate people, then develop, manage and invest heavily in their training so that they not only do an excellent job but love their jobs, too. This makes happier services for the people we support.

We’re here to help in any way we can – so please don't hesitate to get in touch.

How we are regulated

Image

How we are regulated

Barchester Healthcare’s independent hospitals in England are formally responsible to two regulatory bodies. The Care Quality Commission (often referred to as CQC) carries out regular inspections of all hospitals and from the beginning of this year rates them as either  ‘inadequate’, ‘requires improvement’, ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. Copies of CQC reports can be requested from our hospitals or found on our website for each individual hospital, although please note that most of our hospitals have not yet been rated under the new system. They can also be found at the Care Quality Commission’s website: https://www.cqc.org.uk/, which also sets out the role of the Commission in detail.

MONITOR

Our hospitals are also regulated by Monitor, who are sponsored by the Department of Health to ensure that services work for patients’ benefit. Our hospitals must be registered with Monitor, who are responsible for financial oversight of our hospitals, working in partnership with the Care Quality Commission. Details of Monitor’s role can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/monitor

COMMISSIONERS

In addition to formal regulation from these two bodies we are visited and inspected regularly by our commissioners. We can also be visited at any time by Healthwatch, the consumer champion for health and social care, who operate on both a national and a local level.  Local branches of Healthwatch can be located on the Healthwatch UK website: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/monitor , which also provides useful information and recent news on health issues.

INTERNAL REGULATION

In addition to these external agencies Barchester Healthcare has a number of internal quality checks, including the work of our Regulation Team, who carry out frequent inspection visits, Quality First audit visits by our management team and a number of other internal audits processes, including our regular Clinical Governance panels, overseen by our Senior Management Group and our board, with both executive and non-executive members.

We also produce an annual Quality Account that commits us to improving our service through working co-operatively with patients and other stakeholders, such as relatives and regular professional visitors, on goals set by stakeholders. A copy of our current Quality Account is available here.

We would always encourage patients, relatives, commissioners and other health professionals to read the inspection reports on our hospitals and our quality account.

Quality accounts

Quality accounts

Directors of organisations providing hospital services have an obligation under the 2009 Health Act, National Health Service (Quality Accounts) Regulations 2010 and the National Health Service (Quality Accounts) Amendment Regulation 2011 to prepare a Quality Account for each financial year. Guidance has been issued by the Department of Health setting out these legal requirements.

Barchester Healthcare’s annual Quality Account for our hospitals commits us to improving our service through working co-operatively with patients and other stakeholders, such as relatives and regular professional visitors, on goals set by stakeholders. Quality Review panels report back to patients and other stakeholders on progress.

A copy of the current Quality Account for our hospitals is available here.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the regulator for hospitals and other health and social care services in England. CQC says: Safeguarding means protecting people’s health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. It is fundamental to creating high-quality health and social care.

People in need of protection include people with mental health issues and people living with dementia:

Barchester Healthcare helps to safeguard people by:

  • Thoroughly auditing our services from the perspective of patient health and safety
  • Ensuring that service delivery is transparent to commissioners and to relatives
  • Collaborating with local councils and the police when investigation is required
  • Having clear whistle blowing policies for our staff
  • Having a clear commitment to and policy on our duty of candour to patients and relatives
  • Consulting with patients, relatives and other stakeholders about our services

Barchester Healthcare has an absolute commitment to safeguarding the patients we support at all times.

All Barchester Healthcare’s hospital services are delivered in partnership with the NHS on a spot purchase basis. We are committed to providing a comprehensive and rapid referral process which ensures that individuals are placed into the services that are most appropriate to their needs.

Our hospitals provide a range of services. For short-term care needs we have a rehabilitative focus, where we work with referring commissioners to ensure a transparent, outcome-focussed process delivered by our multi-disciplinary support teams.

Where possible and appropriate we work with commissioners and the individual to agree clear, time-specific goals.

Where we are providing longer-term care we focus on independence, dignity and choice, with person-centred care planning and activities programmes.

For details please visit our individual hospitals pages, contact them individually or use the 'Make a Referral' button below.

Care pathways

Care Pathways

By integrated working with local health and social care services, Barchester's independent hospitals can support individuals with mental health issues through integrated care pathways designed to lead back to independence.

Integrated care pathways are dependent on establishing local protocols based on best practice and identifying resources.

Providing step-down services and linking with a range of provider and community-based organisations Barchester supports individuals in maximising their potential to maintain, develop or gain skills through a re-ablement and recovery approach, helping people to move on to a less dependent setting when they are ready.

Our hospitals also provide long-term support to people who require it, with an emphasis on quality of life, independence, dignity and choice.

Career pathways

Our highly trained teams use a recovery model of personalised care to empower individuals and help them take control of their daily life.

More about careers

I have worked alongside staff and patients at Arbour Lodge for over two years now and have always found staff to be kind, supportive and compassionate towards all of the patients in their care. They take the time to know their patients well and therefore the care provided is tailored to the individual in order to work towards the best possible outcome for the patient. The wider multidisciplinary works cohesively and communication with outside agencies is excellent. The team go above and beyond to meet the cultural, social and religious needs of patients staying with them. The recent extension and renovations to the building creates a warm and welcoming environment with bright corridors and spaces to join in activities with others, or to relax quietly in a more de-stimulating environment.

Barchester successfully supports:

Adults under 65 with organic mental health needs, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  • Alcohol-related brain injury
  • Huntington’s disease

Adults over the age of 65 with mental health needs including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, including individuals with complex needs
  • People with histories of functional mental health issues or histories of institutional care
  • People with combinations of the above needs

In our independent hospitals, we focus on enabling recovery from enduring mental illness through choice, change and a positive attitude to improvements in lifestyle.

We work collaboratively with NHS mental health foundation trusts across England, often providing a rehabilitation-focused, step-down service from medium or low secure accommodation. Our services are designed to enable adults living with long-term mental health conditions, improving quality of life and encouraging the greatest possible engagement with the community, either within our hospitals or through step-down.

Our hospitals are licensed by Monitor, the independent regulator for hospitals in England.
